We’ve all heard the saying “Do something every day that scares you” banded around, it is something I try to live by, not something that I do every day but if I am made an offer to do something that scares me I will always have that saying in the back of my mind and it will make me say yes. It’s good to be a little scared sometimes!

So, I recently received an email from Mike Stokes at Positive Networking, he had emailed a select number of members of his networking group and asked us to be Guest Hosts at his events. This means there is one person at each event that welcomes new members, introduces them to others and just keeps an eye on them.

Networking used to be a really good skill of mine, especially when I first set up Creative Content Company, but over the years I have become a little lazy (for want of a better word) and even complacent. I find the people I know and like and they will often introduce me to who they are speaking to. It’s like a cheat’s way of networking.

So when the email came from Mike to say that he would like me to be a Guest Host my initial reaction was to say No; the thought of speaking to a stranger and introducing them to others put the fear of God into me – which is exactly why I said yes. It was not only something that scared me, but it was also a chance to improve on the skills I used to have.

The fact that Mike had specifically chosen me as one of the few made me feel that he must think I can do it or he wouldn’t have asked me. Plus, it was a great chance to make a nervous newcomer to networking feel welcome and less nervous – who wouldn’t want to do that?

If you are looking to do one thing each day that scares you and you haven’t been to Positive Networking before, then why not give it a try. It’s really not that scary and if you come on 23rd February I will be the Guest Host to welcome you!
